All I have done is to slightly tweak the designs based on personal preference.

Now one of the major tasks that remain is to allow easier switching of the stylesheets via javascript. If you are already using a browser such as Mozilla Firefox, then you can access the alternate stylesheets via the View -> Page Style menu option.

As far as allowing for persistence of user selected stylesheet is concerned, I am still debating whether to include that option or not. I personally am not in the favor of using cookies on my blog. But I may give in and include a cookie for the same.

For those of you who are not so fortunate to be using a browser that allows the user to select the stylesheet, here are the screenshots of the same.

Minima Black:

Minima Blue:

Minima Ochre:

--
Posted by maneesh to General at 6/20/2005 05:03:00 PMmaneeshhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09795170743737972614noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6816123.post-1119185662871330492005-06-19T05:54:00.000-07:002005-06-19T05:55:23.120-07:00[Musings] Humsafar...Its a sleepy sunday evening and I am my computer listening to a very beautiful song that I like. The data rate we used to get was pretty good. The only major grouse we had with the connection, was that the cable laid between the nearest hub and my place was frequently getting cut due to uprooting of trees, poles, etc. For the past couple of months my downtime was as high as 70%.

That is when we felt that we need to change our ISP. We have now moved over to BSNL's DataOne service whose cables are laid underground. It is only the second day of using the service. So I cannot give any comments about the QoS as yet.

On an unrelated note, we had dinner yesterday at Karavalli. For this song, top artistes and well known people from various parts of India were roped in to create this great song. It depicts the various flavours of Indian culture, languages, etc.

Here is a version of the same song done by the Indian students community at MIT.

Some of the changes that have made it to the Firefox Aviary Branch are

1) New Firefox secure site notification UI - The secure site indication has been moved from the statusbar to the URLbar. In addition, the color of the URLbar changes when depending on the security level of the web page the user is browsing. The whole idea behind this is to make the secure site indication more noticeable to the user. The icon in the statusbar is often overlooked. However, one thing that the developers had not considered is that many sites that make use of encryption, do so in a new window in which all bars including the URLbar is usually disabled. For example my bank does that. In such scenarios, the user will not get any indication of the encryption level. One way to get around this maybe to prevent sites from hiding the URLbar. Another concern many theme developers were having is that the URLbar will become too cluttered with icons (the favicon as well as the new secure site indication icon). Asa has a screenshot of how this looks in the default theme.

2) New bookmarks manager goodness - Myk Melez, has checked in changes to the bookmark manager. The new bookmark manager now has a windows explorer like interface. This should make organizing bookmarks easier. Head over to Asa's blog for a screenshot.

3) Winstripe updates and Firefox 0.9.1 - Firefox 0.9.1 is going to be released shortly. This is essentially a bug-fix release. It will not include the above changes. However, it will sport an update to the default theme. To see screenshots of the updated theme, checkout Neil's blog.maneeshhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09795170743737972614noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6816123.post-1088263079032995212004-06-26T08:02:00.000-07:002004-06-26T08:17:59.033-07:00Gmail for MozillaMany developers in the Mozilla community are coming up with extensions for checking GMail accounts.

One of them is the Gmail Notifier by doron. This extension, still in the works, adds a toolbar item to Firefox. Clicking on it, lets you login to Gmail. Later clicking on this button again, opens gmail. Also, the icon updates when you have a new mail in your Gmail account.

The second extension that I came across is Gmail Compose by jedbro. This extension adds a context menu link for opening a GMail compose window when clicking on mailto: links.

So if you have Gmail account, then go get these extensions and give them a try. And if you don't use Firefox, then go download it here.maneeshhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09795170743737972614noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6816123.post-1087623997893713462004-06-18T22:38:00.000-07:002004-06-18T22:46:37.893-07:00Thanks Asa!Asa Dotzler has been regularly giving away invites to gmail accounts for the past two weeks. It got involved in a controversy related with Ben Goodger replacing Qute, the default theme developed by Arvid Axelsson with Winstripe developed by the Mozilla Visual Identity Team. The theme was replaced because of some licensing disagreements. Qute, which has matured over time continues to be available as a standalone download from quadrone.org/graphics as well as update.mozilla.org.

However, the same week also saw the release of Mozilla Firefox 0.9, Mozilla Thunderbird 0.7 and Mozilla Suite 1.7.

If that wasn't enough reason to rejoice, came along the news that Nokia is funding Minimo.maneeshhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09795170743737972614noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6816123.post-1087030755698143422004-06-12T01:50:00.000-07:002004-06-12T01:59:15.700-07:00Unemployed!I joined the ranks of the unemployed today. This along with the other code cleanup and packaging work that has been done has reduced the download size of the windows builds of Firefox to 4.6 MB!

The new extension manager is partially functional now in branch builds. Ben posted a message on the mozillazine forums about this. Cheah Chu Yeow has posted on his blog, redemption in a blog, screenshots of the new extension manager.

So those interested in experiencing the latest in Mozilla Firefox, get the builds from the Mozilla Firefox nightly FTP site. The branch builds are the ones whose dates end with "-0.9".maneeshhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09795170743737972614noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6816123.post-1085468334379084232004-05-24T23:51:00.000-07:002004-05-24T23:58:54.380-07:00alternate stylesheetsI have changed the default stylesheet of the blog. But for those who preferred the older Scribe theme, no need to despair. The Scribe theme is still available as an alternate stylesheet. All you need is a browser capable of letting you to switch between them. In case your browser doesn't have this capablity, then you seriously need to consider getthing yourself a real browser.maneeshhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09795170743737972614noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6816123.post-1085465562241312972004-05-24T23:12:00.000-07:002004-05-24T23:12:42.240-07:00Who wrote Linux?Ken Brown, President of the Alexis de Tocqueville Institution has authored an as yet unpublished book about the history of UNIX. In that he has made a lot of claims one of which is that Linus did not write Linux. Andrew S. Tanenbaum who was one of the people Ken Brown interviewed for his book, refutes the claims made in the book and has posted detailed information about the same on his site. The article gives a nice in-sight into the development of UNIX and its clones. In addition, Tanenbaum has posted a followup to the same. If Operating Systems interest you, go give both the articles a read.maneeshhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09795170743737972614noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6816123.post-1085317361537846252004-05-23T06:00:00.000-07:002004-05-23T22:49:15.750-07:00Mozilla updatesThere have been a host of mozilla related updates over the weekend.
